Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County
Mission Statement
“To inspire wonder, discovery, and responsibility for our natural and cultural worlds.”
Grey Duck Labs partnered with the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles to bring their Fierce Cats exhibit to life through immersive Augmented Reality experiences that thrilled, educated, and transformed museumgoers of all ages. In collaboration with NHMLA, we designed two innovative AR activations that merged playful interactivity with scientific storytelling—inviting visitors to not just learn about fierce cats, but become them.
The first experience turned users into wild cats themselves. With a quick scan using their smartphone, guests were digitally morphed into panthers, lions, and other formidable felines—complete with animated ears, whiskers, and tails. As users explored their transformed reflection, engaging facts about feline behavior, biology, and survival adaptations appeared dynamically, helping visitors understand what it's like to see, hear, hunt, and live like a cat in the wild.
The second AR layer transformed the hallway leading to the exhibit into an immersive jungle corridor. Visitors were guided through lush, layered greenery, ambient sounds, and hidden feline figures that appeared to watch curiously from behind vines and trees. This spatial experience recontextualized the museum’s architecture, transforming it into an adventurous gateway that set the stage for the main exhibit in a way that felt both magical and meaningful.
Together, these experiences showcased how Grey Duck Labs and NHMLA used the power of Augmented Reality to blur the line between education and imagination—making science tactile, immersive, and memorable. By augmenting physical space with digital storytelling, we helped guests connect emotionally and intellectually with one of nature’s most iconic predators, before they ever stepped into the exhibit itself.
